Cannabis et préjugés : une belle histoire d’amour

Cannabis and prejudice: a beautiful love story

When I say “cannabis”, do you immediately think of a guy with dreadlocks? Marie-Janine breaks down your prejudices around cannabis and talks to you about the reality of this (super) plant.

If I talk to you about cannabis, you probably think of that slightly too chill friend who wears dreadlocks and calls himself a citizen of the world.

A bit like that.

Yes, I'm exaggerating, but prejudices around cannabis die hard. And this has been happening for over a century with prohibition.

In this article we will talk about the bad reputation of cannabis and Marie-Janine's vision to break down prejudices (and the arguments of your colleagues).

Clichés around cannabis die hard

Bob Marley, the hippies, and Pôle Emploi. This is not the start of a bad joke (we promise) but rather the images that come to mind when we talk about smoking cannabis, with the sweet names of bangers, weed or grass.

Don't shake your head like that.

It's normal if everyone has entrenched prejudices. For more than a century, the cannabis plant has been criticized and viewed negatively, even for therapeutic cannabis . Weed smokers would be outsiders, people who are a little down on their luck, who take other narcotics, and so on.

Whether it contains a high percentage of THC for recreational use like your friends on Saturday night, or whether it is used for well-being with a high content of cannabidiol (CBD), this plant is more talked about her as Prince Harry's latest gossip book.

Oops.

The reality around cannabis

However, if you have read our article on the differences between cannabis and hemp , you know that it is the same plant: cannabis sativa.

The difference lies in the content of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD which comes from different varieties of cannabinaceae.

For CBD to be sold legally, its THC content must not exceed 0.3%. It is therefore legal to consume cannabis in France. Eh yes !

As you have seen, CBD shops have been growing like little plants in recent years and generating a lot of jobs. Here are some figures on employment linked to CBD : we are talking about 6,000 jobs in France if we only count CBD traders but this figure can rise to between 40,000 and 80,000 jobs if we take the entire chain production (production, manufacturing, distribution).

In reality, the cultivation of hemp, before the explosion of CBD popularity, existed for the use of its fiber, particularly its stem, in the industrial world; stationery, textile industry, automobile, insulation…

Hemp has therefore been cultivated for millennia.

To date, 47 American states have legalized cannabis under conditions (medical and/or recreational use), as well as Canada (in 2018) and Uruguay (in 2013). On the European side, there are 22 countries which authorize medical use of the plant. That's not bad ! And in 2022, Malta and Germany announced plans for recreational legalization. Danke schön!

All this to tell you that cannabis smokers are just about everyone. There are approximately 160 million consumers worldwide . That makes them people who wear dreadlocks and who are at Pôle Emploi, right?

All joking aside, many people are cannabis lovers and use it regularly, or occasionally, in their private sphere. Whether it's to relax, seek inspiration, have fun, many prefer it to a glass of wine (or several).

But as with alcohol, it's dangerous to drive afterwards!

CBD to break down prejudices

If CBD is so popular, or rather the leaf is in vogue, it is because the clichés around the cannabis plant are starting to fade.

This is the whole point of Marie-Janine: to show a new, more modern and less clichéd side of the cannabis consumer.

It could be your grandmother who wants to calm her insomnia and anxiety with a CBD rooibos ; your sister who is taking her exams and looking to improve her concentration with CBD black tea or your super sporty best friend who wants to consume more super foods with the dark chocolate bar with hemp seeds.

In short, there's something for everyone ! And I promise, you don't have to like reggae to relax with Marie-Janine's hemp products .

Come on, we're good.
